Cushing (Harvard, A.B. 1808; Dartmouth, M.B. 1811) was born in Pembroke, Mass. and practiced in Boston. Born in Rehoboth, RI, in 1762, Smith grew up in Chester, VT. He apprenticed in Putney, VT, and began a medical practice in Cornish, NH. He attended Harvard where he obtained his M.B. in 1790, and continued his practice in the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont, for many years in partnership with Cyrus Perkins.
